About OpenTechnical

OpenTechnical.org is an open technical-publication library. Its purpose is to make engineering information permanently and publicly accessible in a form that can be searched, cited, downloaded, archived and independently verified.

The library focuses on industrial technology: material handling systems, robotics, automation, industrial tools, conveying systems, warehousing equipment, machine components, controls and related fields.

Every OpenTechnical publication receives a permanent publication identifier and a publication timestamp. Published technical content is preserved in its original form and is not silently revised. Access requires no registration, no payment and no confidentiality agreement.

Why it is built the way it is

A technical disclosure is only useful to anybody later if three things hold: it can be found, it can be shown to be the same document it was on the day it appeared, and the day it appeared can be established without taking the publisher's word for it. Most of the engineering here serves those three requirements rather than the reading experience.

Publications are static files. They are written once, hashed, listed in a signed manifest, and then served directly without the application server or the database touching them. A failure in the search engine, the database or the administrative system cannot make a published document disappear, because none of them is in the path that serves it.

Discovery deliberately has four independent paths: the technical taxonomy, full-text search, the chronological archive and the publication number index. Any one of them is sufficient to locate a disclosure, so a classification mistake or a search outage does not make material unfindable.

Content

Publications are technical disclosures: descriptions, diagrams, embodiments, alternatives, examples, configurations and parameter ranges. They are prepared for disclosure rather than for peer review, and they are not claimed to be built, tested or validated designs. Where a publication does report something that was actually made or measured, it says so explicitly. See the publication policy.
