The present invention relates to an apparatus and a method for identifying, measuring and positioning piece goods, said device and method having an increased throughput of piece goods compared to known apparatuses and methods. The apparatus comprises: an optically transparent turntable (10) having a support surface (11) for piece goods that extends in an X and Y direction of the apparatus; a first conveying device (30) for arranging an item of piece goods on the support surface (11) of the turntable (10); a first optical reading device (61) located below the turntable (10) for detecting the dimensions of an item of piece goods and the dimensions of an identifier; a second optical reading device (62) for detecting the height of an item of piece goods resting on the support surface (11) and the height of an identifier; a depositing area (51) located downstream of the turntable (10) for a plurality of piece goods; a second conveying device (40) having a gripping means (35, 45) for piece goods, the gripping means (35, 45) being movable at least in an X and Y direction over the depositing area (51) in such a way that piece goods can be arranged next to one another in the X and/or Y direction in the depositing area.
