Abstract

This disclosure relates to determining carryback of material on a belt of a conveyor system. A laser profiler directs a laser beam to points on the belt. The points are arranged in a line on the belt and the laser profiler detects light reflected off the points to calculate a distance profile along the line. A computer receives the distance profile measured by the laser profiler, determines one or more of the multiple points that are measured above a profile of the belt; and determines the carryback of the material on the belt based on the one or more points that are above the profile of the conveyor system. The disclosed methods can be used to provide accurate detection of carryback. This results in improved operations, more efficient material transport, reduced wear and improved safety for the operators.
