Abstract

A means of controlling a work machine (100 fig.1) relative to an overhead power line (109 fig.1) has a plurality of electric field sensors (120 fig.1). When the machine is working in the vicinity of an overhead power line the strength of the electric field is continuously monitored to determine if the field strength exceeds a first threshold 440 and if so the machine is automatically stopped 450. The operator may override the system to regain control of the machine 470 but this may be in a derated mode where the performance of the machine is reduced 460. Should the magnitude of the sensed electric field reach or exceed a further predetermined threshold 480, greater than the first, then the machine is automatically stopped again 490. The operator may not be allowed to re-enable machine movement and may require an administrator password to reset the system.
